THE SPECTRE was created by the legendary co-creator of SUPERMAN, JERRY SIEGEL, and first appeared in MORE FUN COMICS #52 (Feb. 1940). When hard-boiled cop Jim Corrigan, on his way with his fiancée Clarice to their engagement party, was murdered by thugs, he was stuffed into a barrel filled with cement and then throw it into a body of water. His spirit was refused entry into the afterlife however, and he was sent back to Earth by an entity referred to only as "The Voice" to eliminate evil. He was portrayed as an all-powerful Spirit of Vengeance, exacting horrible payment for those who practiced evil.

By the mid 1960s he had been revived by DC and appeared in 3 issues of SHOWCASE before being awarded his own title. And that brings us to THE SPECTRE #4, appearing in newsstands in early 1968, with story by  and dramatically dynamic art by Neal Adams!

In "Stop That Kid . . Before He Wrecks the World!", Jim Corrigan investigates a case involving a missing boy, Hamilton Benedict. The Spectre locates the boy who has been possessed by an evil spirit and tries to draw the evil out of the boy, but he is unable to do so without causing harm. The evil spirit then begins causing destruction on Earth. Spectre tracks the source of the evil through space. He finds several worlds that the spirit visited which are now completely evil. He returns to Earth without a solution on how to stop the evil without killing young Hamilton. Jim Corrigan urges him to make a decision to save the world or save the boy.

The Spectre then begins his attack. Though he initially decides to sacrifice the boy, he cannot go through with it. By demonstrating compassion for the child, the Spectre is able to drive out the evil spirit. The spirit then leaves the Earth having been defeated by the power of goodness.

This is a fantastic-looking 53-year old Silver Age SPECTRE -- no creases, tears, pieces missing, or abnormal toning. The binding is strong, and the colors are bright.   We grade this an 9.0 VF/NM . . . which Overstreet values at $111 . . . but we're pricing it at just $60 . . with our customary L•O•W shipping!
