Item Description
This issue of the decades-long run of DELL FOUR COLOR is practically a 52-page advertisement for their then-current film, "Fun and Fancy Free"! That was a theatrical feature that comprised two animated tales - "Bongo" and "Mickey and the Beanstalk", which started out as feature length films but were condensed and shortened due to wartime economics at the studio. The 39-page lead story here faithfully adapts the animated version, and has some of the early and beautiful comic book work of the gifted Harvey Eisenberg, best known for his animation and comic book work with Tom and Jerry and later Hanna-Barbara characters. He illustrates the 'Disneyfied' Jack and the beanstalk story, wherein famine strikes Happy Valley when the Golden Harp is stolen. After Mickey trades his cow for some magic beans, a giant beanstalk grows into the sky, taking Mickey, Goofy, and Donald's house with it. In the land in the sky, the three go to the giant's castle and rescue the Golden Harp.
There's also a 12-page story, "Pluto Keeps It Quiet" in which Mickey gets a job as a night watchman and Pluto tries to keep the house completely quiet when Mickey sleeps during the day. Also terrifically done by Eisenberg.
This is a nice copy with a strong binding, colorful printing, and minor edge wear for a 73-year old comic book. The only impediments to a higher grade are two small holes near the spine where someone at some point must have made the comic able to fit in a binder. Amazingly little toning, though, and a joy to read!! A 6.0 FN is our conservative estimate for a comic of this vintage!
Overstreet cites this grade at $66! We feel more comfortable pricing it at $40 . . with our customary L•O•W shipping!
It's the only one available here on HipComic, and your only chance to add it to your collection at this bargain price!
