Item Description
The summer of 1968 was a tumultuous time in the U.S., but the great Neal Adams was able to take our minds off all the turbulence of July with his amazing art, and history-cognizant story, in THE SPECTRE #5!THE SPECTRE, as a character, was created by the legendary co-creator of SUPERMAN, JERRY SIEGEL, and first appeared in MORE FUN COMICS #52 (Feb. 1940). When hard-boiled cop Jim Corrigan, on his way with his fiancée Clarice to their engagement party, was murdered by thugs, he was stuffed into a barrel filled with cement and then thrown it into a body of water. His spirit was refused entry into the afterlife however, and he was sent back to Earth by an entity referred to only as "The Voice" to eliminate evil. He was portrayed as an all-powerful 'Spirit of Vengeance', exacting horrible payment for those who practiced evil.
By the mid 1960s he had been revived by DC and appeared in 3 issues of SHOWCASE before being awarded his own title. And that brings us to THE SPECTRE #5, appearing o!n newsstands in Summer 1968, with story -- and dramatically dynamic art --- by Neal Adams!
In "The Spectre Means Death!/Fugitive from Justice!", the PSYCHO-PIRATE steals a magic globe to locate a source of mystic energy that will enable him to remove the magic mask that DOCTOR FATE used to deny him the use of his powers (in SHOWCASE #56!). The globe gives the PIRATE control over a homeless man who becomes a giant and can duplicate the emotion-manipulation powers of his master. When the SPECTRE tries to stop the giant drifter, PSYCHO-PIRATE causes bystanders to fear him. He also siphons off the SPECTRE's powers.
THE SPECTRE seeks to renew his energy by entering the body of JIM CORRIGAN, but CORRIGAN wants to arrest him. Instead, the SPECTRE uses his remaining power in a final confrontation with the homeless man - who turns out to be GAT BENSON - the very drifter who killed JIM CORRIGAN in THE SPECTRE's very first story, in MORE FUN COMICS #52, way back in 1948!.
This is a fantastic-looking 56-year old Silver Age SPECTRE -- no creases, tears, pieces missing, or abnormal toning. The binding is strong, and the colors are bright. We grade this an 8.0 VF. . . which Overstreet values at $61 . . . but we're pricing it at just $40 . . with our customary L•O•W shipping!
