Introduced in, and appearing initially in three 1972 issues of, the tryout title MARVEL PREMIERE, WEREWOLF BY NIGHT almost immediately ascended to having its own title by September of 1972. It told of the tragic adventures of young Jack Russell, who was born into a long lineage of ‘Lycanthropy’ - and shared with his forebears the horror of turning into a Werewolf whenever the moon was full!

In “A Life For A Death!”, written by Len Wein, and unmistakably illustrated by Mike Ploog, Jack Russell attempts to rescue girlfriend Lissa from her captors, but is told Lissa's curse can only be cured if Jack kills billionaire Judson Hemp as the WEREWOLF. Jack reluctantly agrees, but when the WEREWOLF reaches Hemp, he turns out to be a gentle-hearted, senile old man that the WEREWOLF doesn't want to kill. 

A well-timed lunar eclipse gives Jack a moment to come to his senses and escape Hemp's compound. The eclipse ends, and the WEREWOLF's wrath turns on Lissa's captors.

Mike Ploog's artwork was like a breath of fresh air at this time, along with his simultaneous work on GHOST RIDER - his vaguely cartoony approach, but tempered with dramatic dynamism, was an instant hit with fans!

This is a great-looking and pretty flawless copy of WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #5 with no faults or blemishes that we can see!Though there is a 3/4" tear on the back cover, it can easily earn a grade of7.0 FN/VF for a 51-year old comic!
