Introduced in, and appearing initially in three 1972 issues of the tryout title MARVEL PREMIERE, WEREWOLF BY NIGHT almost immediately ascended to having its own title by September of 1972. It told of the tragic adventures of young Jack Russell, who was born into a long lineage of ‘Lycanthropy’ - and shared with his forebears the horror of turning into a Werewolf whenever the moon was full!

Here in WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #1 we get “Eye of the Beholder” by co-creators Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, along with artist Mike Ploog, continuing with the story that started in MARVEL SPOTLIGHT #4.
Due to the actions of a mutant gorgon named Marlene Blackgar, the Werewolf has been turned into solid stone. However, as the sun rises, he transforms back into flesh and blood as Jack Russell.

Buck Cowan finds Jack on the beach, and brings him back to his house. Jack tells Buck that he still possesses the Darkhold, the arcane book of werewolf history. As the two talk, Jack receives a frantic telephone call from his girlfriend Lissa. She arranges to meet up with him at Buck's place. Little does Jack realize that Marlene is forcing Lissa to set Jack up. She wants to regain the Darkhold for herself.

Marlene and her henchmen find Jack and manage to capture him. Jack succeeds in escaping just as the moon begins to rise. He races away from the Blackgar home, leaving Buck and Lissa still captive. Turning into the werewolf, he circles back and enters the castle. 
 In the ensuing face off with Jack, Marlene removes her sunglasses intent on turning him back into stone. The werewolf lunges out of the way, and Marlene accidentally catches her own reflection in a wall-mounted mirror. She is instantly turned to stone!

Buck Cowan takes possession of the "statue" and donates it to the Santa Monica Art Museum!
