Item Description
Here is a gorgeous copy of just the third UNCLE SCROOGE story in his own title - a sought-after treasure from 1953 - Dell Four Color #495. Carl Barks' creation of the unimaginably wealthy, but cantankerous, uncle of Donald and his nephews had debuted 11 years earlier in an issue of DONALD DUCK. Barks found the character and his wealth a useful springboard for stories and re-used him in a number of subsequent Donald Duck one-shot adventures and ten pagers appearing in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories. But by 1952 the popularity of the character convinced Dell to give SCROOGE a try-out as a lead character in the seminal "Only a Poor Old Man" in Dell's Four Color anthology series. Here in Dell Four Color #495 you get 36 full ad-free pages of Carl Barks' masterful storytelling and appealing artwork. In the 22-page lead story, "Horseradish Treasure", SCROOGE is faced with the loss of his entire fortune to Chisel McSue because, many years before, an ancestor of SCROOGE's failed to deliver a case of horseradish to Jamaica, and then failed to give all his property to McSue's ancestor, as provided in a contract. SCROOGE can save his fortune only by fulfilling the terms of the original contract, and the ducks set out in a small sailing ship to find the horseradish, which was on a ship that sank in the Caribbean.
You also get the 10-page back-up story, "The Round Money Bin", wherein, for safety's sake, SCROOGE has his coins changed into greenbacks and stores them in an old water tank, but this fails to stop the Beagle Boys.
And there are also three one-page gag stories on the inside covers and the back cover!
This is a genuinely beautiful copy of this 70-year-old comic, just dazzling in its marvelous condition! It has a strong binding and minimal toning, supple pages, and bright colors! Even a nice gloss to the covers. There are very faint crease lines on the cover, and a few small stress lines, and the whole comic is cut slightly askew. We are concurring with the auctioneer's experienced grading of a 7.0 FN/VF . . for which the Overstreet Guide gives this sought-after issue a value of $330 . . . But our price is just $290, plus FREE shipping!
