Item Description
Here is a gorgeous copy of just the fourth UNCLE SCROOGE story in his own title - a sought-after treasure from late 1953 - Walt Disney's UNCLE SCROOGE #4. Carl Barks' creation of the unimaginably wealthy, but cantankerous, uncle of Donald and his nephews had debuted 11 years earlier in an issue of DONALD DUCK.Barks found the character and his wealth a useful springboard for stories and re-used him in a number of subsequent Donald Duck one-shot adventures and ten pagers appearing in WALT DISNEY'S COMICS AND STORIES. But by 1952 the popularity of the character convinced Dell to give SCROOGE a try-out as a lead character in the seminal "Only a Poor Old Man" in Dell's Four Color anthology series.
Here in what was at first planned to be Dell Four Color #521 you get 36 full ad-free pages of Carl Barks' masterful storytelling and appealing artwork. In the 32-page lead story, "The Menehune Mystery", SCROOGE has his money canned before shipping it to an Hawaiian island he has bought, but the Beagle Boys have infiltrated the canning operation and have bought the ship SCROOGE uses. They make the ducks their prisoners on the island, which is now populated only by one old Hawaiian Opu Nui (Big Tummy) and the Menehunes--a race of dwarf-like beings from Hawaiian mythology who are known for their magical powers and mischief!
And there are also three one-page gag stories on the inside covers and the back cover!
This is a genuinely beautiful copy of this 71-year-old comic, just dazzling in its marvelous condition! It has a strong binding and minimal toning, supple pages, and bright colors! Even a nice gloss to the covers. We are concurring with the auctioneer's experienced grading of a 7.0 FN/VF . . for which the Overstreet Price Guide gives this sought-after issue a value of $269 . . . But our price is just $175, plus FREE SHIPPING!
Own this example of a key Disney comic book - at a great price - which just keeps rising in value with every new Overstreet Price Guide!
