The NEW MUTANTS were a group of mutant superheroes, debuting in 1982 written by Chris Claremont as a young teenaged junior class at the same institute as the X-MEN. It featured an ensemble cast, with stories often focused on interpersonal relationships and coming-of-age arcs, blending teen drama with action and adventure. The title was later taken over by writer Louise Simonson, ultimately taking a more action-oriented focus under artist Rob Liefeld, who relaunched the characters as X-Force following the series' end.

Here is the third-to-last issue of The NEW MUTANTS, plotted and illustrated by Liefeld, and notorious as introducing the popular mercenary/assassin character, DEADPOOL. In "The Beginning of the End Part 1" - briefly - Gideon arranges for the murder of Sunspot's father; DEADPOOL, working for Mr. Tolliver, attacks Cable; Domino defeats him; Cable and Domino plot strategy; Rictor decides to go after Wolfsbane, who stayed in Genosha; and Gideon tells Sunspot his father is dead.
