THE HAWK AND THE DOVE was a series created by the legendary STEVE DITKO in 1968 in issue #75 of DC’s SHOWCASE. The title quickly made the transition into a comic book of their own - and here are the final three issues from February to June of 1969.

DITKO imagined the HAWK and the DOVE as teenage brothers - Hank Hall, as HAWK, was the aggressive, short-tempered, and impulsive one, while brother Don Hall was the more sedate, thoughtful and compassionate one. Inspired by the emerging political divides of the 1960s between pro-war hawks and pacifist doves, the concept revolves around these two young heroes with contrasting personalities and diametrically opposed ideologies who, by speaking their superhero names, are transformed and granted powers of heightened strength, speed, and agility.

Issue #4, with story Steve Skeates, and artwork by the incomparable Gil Kane, offers up “The Sell Out!" and tells of when an artist friend of Don's is murdered, HAWK and DOVE embark on a case that turns out to involve art forgery and political corruption as well.

In "Walk with Me, O' Brother... Death Has Taken My Hand!", in issue #5, Judge Hall - HAWK and DOVE's father, believes an old friend of his has been framed for robbery and manslaughter. His superhero sons investigate but before the truth is revealed, HAWK is critically injured and DOVE goes against his beliefs by violently beating the man responsible. There is a cameo by the TEEN TITANS!

And in issue #6, you get “Judgment in a Small, Dark Place!”, one of the very few stories Gil Kane also scripted in his career. In it Judge Hall is kidnapped by the son of a man he once sent to prison and it's HAWK and DOVE to the rescue!

Issues #5 and #6 each carry 1-page historical essays on DC Heroes in the 'FACT FILE' series running in DC comics at the time. Here you get coverage of WILDCAT and THE SPECTRE - both Golden Age and Silver Age incarnations!

These three copies of the final HAWK AND DOVE comics (of Volume 1) have been read and enjoyed over their 57 years. All three copies have sturdy bindings, supple pages, and no tears or pieces missing. #5 has a small piece of the binding loose at the bottom, cover stress lines, and dingy scuffing on the back cover . . but nothing in the condition of the three stand in the way of enjoying Gil Kane's dynamic and exciting art!

We’ll give the trio an aggregate 5.0 VG/FN grade . . for which the Overstreet Price Guide gives a value of $36 . . . but we think $20 is more fair!
