THE HAWK AND THE DOVE was a series created by the legendary STEVE DITKO in 1968 in issue #75 of DC’s SHOWCASE. The title quickly made the transition into a comic book of their own - and here are the first three issues from August to December of 1968.

Ditko imagined the HAWK and the DOVE as teenage brothers - Hank Hall, as HAWK, was the aggressive, short-tempered, and impulsive one, while brother Don Hall was the more sedate, thoughtful and compassionate one. Inspired by the emerging political divides of the 1960s between pro-war hawks and pacifist doves, the concept revolves around these two young heroes with contrasting personalities and diametrically opposed ideologies who, by speaking their superhero names, are transformed and granted powers of heightened strength, speed, and agility.

Issue #1, plotted and illustrated by Ditko, with a script by Steve Skeates, offers up “The Dove Is a Very Gentle Bird” and tells of ‘The Drop-Outs’, a gang of thieves, who run rampant in the college town of Elmond. HAWK and DOVE are unable to capture them due to their constant bickering.

“Jailbreak!”, in issue #2, tells of the Hall family on vacation encountering a group of escaped convicts. DOVE defeats the ringleader his own way, without resorting to extreme violence like his brother HAWK.

And in issue #3, with a new logo, and with Gil Kane taking over the pencilling duties, you get two shorter stories - “After the Cat!”, about how the criminal Cat is shot and captured by the police, when neither HAWK's nor DOVE's methods are successful. And in “Twice Burned!” Hank and Don learn that a friend’s father was beaten up, and they work separately to find out what happened.

These three copies of the first HAWK AND DOVE comics have obviously been read and enjoyed over their 55 years. All three copies have a bit of handwriting or penwork on the covers, and what looks like a subscription crease, but they have sturdy bindings, supple pages, and no tears or pieces missing &mdash we’ll say #1 and #2 are in 4.0 VG condition. #3 fared better and grades at a 5.0 FN. We’ll give the trio an aggregate 4.5 VG+ grade . . for which Overstreet gives a value of $29 . . . but we think $20 is more fair!
