JACK KIRBY's arrival at DC was the biggest comics news of 1970! I remember the excitement and speculation about just what he would do with the established DC characters . . . or new ones born of his limitless imagination! Unfortunately all that hype and imagination did not translate into sales . . and his 'Fourth World' group of titles were unceremoniously cancelled in the midst of their story arcs.

But THE DEMON, his first foray into the 'horror' genre at DC, was a bit different, and created a character that has remained in the DC Universe. In order to stay, Kirby signed a contract to produce a title for them that he really didn't think would go over well . . but it wound up being one of his most long-lasting successes at DC!

ETRIGAN THE DEMON was a demon from Hell who, despite his violent tendencies, usually found himself allied with the forces of good, mainly because of the alliance between DC's heroes and JASON BLOOD, a human to whom ETRIGAN is bound. The character was originally based in Gotham City, leading to numerous team-ups with BATMAN.

In these fourth and fifth issues in the series, The DEMON encounters a small strange, ape-like being at the home of a recent suicide, but must flee as the sheriff and his deputies arrive. In "The Creature From The Beyond!", the officers take the small being with them . . . but are fear-stricken when it turns into an otherworldly monster, which escapes and leaves many in its wake, scared to DEATH!

ETRIGAN becomes a captive of the ever-changing monster and is delivered to its 'keepers' in Europe, who nearly end the DEMON's life . . until his protector, The WIZARD MERLIN, arrives!

Issue #5 brings "Merlin's Word . . Demon's Wrath!", in which ETRIGAN and MERLIN consistently battle their tormentors at a sinister old castle, and encounter SOMNAMBULA, The Dream-Beast!!

These are solid copies of one of KIRBY's best DC creations. The bindings are strong, the pages are supple and free of toning. They do show a modicum of wear and both have a very slight subscription fold evident on front and back covers (#4 has a tiny piece missing from the bottom and edge of the front cover) - but all-in-all handsome copies and a terrific part of any KIRBY collection!

Overstreet values these issues in this 4.0 VG condition at $16 for the pair . . . but we're offering them as a set for just $12, which makes them available to you at by far the most demonically-affordable price here on HipComic for this duo!
