JACK KIRBY's arrival at DC was the biggest comics news of 1970! I remember the excitement and speculation about just what he would do with the established DC characters . . . or new ones born of his limitless imagination! Unfortunately all that hype and imagination did not translate into sales . . and his 'Fourth World' group of titles were unceremoniously cancelled in the midst of their story arcs.

But THE DEMON, his first foray into the 'horror' genre at DC, was a bit different, an created a character that has remained in the DC Universe. In order to stay, Kirby signed a contract to produce a title for them that he really didn't think would go over very well . . but it wound up being one of his most long-lasting successes at DC!

ETRIGAN THE DEMON was a demon from Hell who, despite his violent tendencies, usually found himself allied with the forces of good, mainly because of the alliance between DC's heroes and JASON BLOOD, a human to whom ETRIGAN is bound. The character was originally based in Gotham City, leading to numerous team-ups with Batman.

In these second and third issues in the series, troubled Jason Blood is suffering, with images of himself as a demon, and finds himself in Europe at the castle home of Morgan le Fey, the dangerous villainess of the King Arthur legends. JACK KIRBY's's wild imagination produces, spells, incantations, and a horde of stone Gargoyles at le Fey's command, all encountered by ETRIGAN THE DEMON in non-stop magic-infused action!

Issue #3 introduces the familiar habit of ETRIGN speaking in rhyme, as he and his friend RANDU face danger after danger both awake and asleep in "Reincarnators!".

There is even a fascinating text page in each issue, written by Mark Evanier and his partner, examining and exploring the world of ETRIGAN in a series about 'Demonology'!

These are solid copies of one of Kirby's best DC creations. The bindings are strong, the pages are supple and free of toning. They do show a modicum of wear and both have a very slight subscription fold evident on front and back covers - but all-in-all handsome copies and a terrific part of any KIRBY collection! Overstreet values these issues in this 4.0 VG condition at $16 for the pair . . . but we're offering them as a set for just $12, which makes them available to you at by far the most demonically-affordable price here on HipComic for this duo!
