JACK KIRBY's arrival at DC was the biggest comics news of 1970! I remember the excitement and speculation about just what he would do with the established DC characters . . . or new ones born of his limitless imagination! Unfortunately all that hype and imagination did not translate into sales . . and his 'Fourth World' group of titles were unceremoniously cancelled in the midst of their story arcs.

Here is the first issue of THE DEMON, his first foray into the 'horror' genre at DC. In order to stay he signed a contract to produce a title for them that he really didn't think would go over very well . . but it wound up being one of his most long-lasting successes at DC!

ETRIGAN THE DEMON was a demon from Hell who, despite his violent tendencies, usually found himself allied with the forces of good, mainly because of the alliance between DC's heroes and JASON BLOOD, a human to whom ETRIGAN is bound. The character was originally based in Gotham City, leading to numerous team-ups with Batman.

In this first issue, Kirby introduces us to THE DEMON through the troubles young Jason Blood is suffering, with images of himself as a demon. Morgan le Fey, the dangerous villainess of the King Arthur legends, has been influencing Jason teepthically, in hopes of raising the DEMON to destry her age-old nemesis, Merlin the Magician.

Jason eventually is driven to visit his ancestral home in Europe, and there, with violence and danger all around, he is mystically transformed into his 'other self' - the DEMON ETRIGAN!

There is even a fascinating text page, written by Jack Kirby himself, where he discusses his concepts and characters and the new DEMON, and the upcoming KAMANDI strip.

This is a good-looking and solid copy of one of Kirby's best DC creations. The binding is strong, although the front cover is very slightly loose near the bottom and there are several very small pieces out if the cover - but all-in-all a handsome copy and a terrific part of any Kirby collection!
