EC Comics' TALES CALCULATED TO DRIVE YOU MAD had a flood of imitators throughout the comic book industry after its 1952 debut. One of them was the one Archie Comics put out in 1961: TALES CALCULATED TO DRIVE YOU BATS_. _It concentrated on the werewolves, vampires and other horror motifs that were wildly popular at the time, taking a humorous approach and aiming at the teen audience.

The first issue of TALES CALCULATED TO DRIVE YOU BATS, dated November, 1961, was mostly written by Archie Comics regular George Gladir, who would co-create Sabrina the Teenage Witch the following year. It was drawn by ORLANDO BUSINO, whose illustrating career included much non-Archie work, such as _Gus,_ which appeared in _Boys Life_ magazine (The Tracy Twins) and hundreds of one-panel gags in SATURDAY EVENING POST. Gladir stayed with the title through its 7-issue run, but Busino left after issue #3.

Here in the first 36-page issue, (and the only one with a 10¢ cover price) you get wall-to-wall BUSINO, a particular favorite of mine for his clear and appealing style. He and Gladir find the funny side of Mummies, Werewolves, Vampires and Witches in 11 fun features of varying lengths. The center spread features a 'cut-it-out-yourself' werewolf mask, also by Busino!

This is a pretty nice copy - flexible pages, good color, minor toning, but with a small handwritten number on the front cover and a strange stain on the back cover that has also slightly darkened small areas of a few adjoining pages. The centerfold mask is in great condition - and that's what most collectors focus on.
