Item Description
"The World's Greatest Adventure Character" celebrated his 10th anniversary in comic books with this special 52-page issue of SUPERMAN, from the Summer of 1948!The Man of Steel stars in three 10-page stories: "The Origin of Superman", in which, after a prologue which demonstrates his amazing abilities, Superman's origin is recounted for the third time. (and, if by chance you've never heard it: On the scientifically advanced planet of Krypton, Jor-El fails to convince the Council of Five that Krypton is doomed. As Krypton explodes, Jor-El and Lara send their son to Earth, where he is found and adopted by the elderly Kents. As Clark grows to maturity he manifests abilities far beyond that of mortal men. On his deathbed, his father urges Clark to become a powerful force for good as Superman.) Art by Wayne Boring.
Then there is "The Oracle From Metropolis", wherein Professor Grog accidentally sends Superman and mechanic Mike Mooney back to ancient Egypt. The cynical Mooney tries to come up with ways to make money off of the Delphic Oracle, but Superman teaches him not to scoff at things he doesn't understand. Art by Al Plastino.
And in "A Job for SUPERHOMBRE!", The Eye takes all the criminals in Metropolis to South America to set up a giant piracy operation, using the home of an old friend of Lois' as a front. Art by Al Plastino.
Rounding out the other 29 pages are background articles, text stories, and plenty of fun ads that would appeal to post-war kids!
This copy has pretty obviously been enjoyed many times over its 73-year-old life -- the cover is the main detractor with its wrinkles, ragged edges and handwriting, and a chunk out of the back cover. But the binding is solid, and the pages have relatively little toning for their age. Pages are supple, with no tears, and the color is good. We'll grade this at a 2.0 GD, which gives you an affordable chance to read these great early stories of SUPERMAN's exploits. Overstreet values issue #53 in a grade of 2.0 GD at $380 . . . but we'll expose that to a little Kryptonite and let this copy go for $280!
With FREE shipping! It's the only SUPERMAN #53 available on HipComic!
