Item Description
PRINCE NAMOR, THE SUB-MARINER was actually the 'grand daddy' of the whole MARVEL comics line, being the first SuperAntihero published in the 1940s by what would later become Marvel comics! It wasn't until the late 1960s that he was able to earn his own title once more, after making several guest appearances in comics like DAREDEVIL, FANTASTIC FOUR and TALES TO ASTONISH.Here in issue #14 from late 1969 the SUB-MARINER is confronted by a foe from the 1940s when both were Golden Age comic book stars! In "Burn, Namor . . Burn!", from the typewriter of Roy Thomas, the pencils of Marie Severin, and the brush and pen of Mike Esposito, NAMOR sees prehistoric fish fleeing an underwater fissure and goes to investigate the unnatural volcanic activity when he is attacked by the HUMAN TORCH.
NAMOR learns that the HUMAN TORCH is under the evil prognosticator the MAD THINKER's control. The Atlantean defeats the HUMAN TORCH and frees him from the THINKER's mind control. They briefly tussle, but then defeat the THINKER and destroy his machinery, but not before the HUMAN TORCH learns that he's actually TORO, the Torch's young former sidekick, all grown up and married, but dies protecting NAMOR and stopping the THINKER from escaping.
It's a story that could only spring from the mind of Roy Thomas, with his unique love and knowledge of Golden Age Comic history!
This is a good-looking copy of SUB-MARINER #14, with a strong binding and minimal toning of its 54-year old pages! There is still a gloss to the cover, and no ragged edges. We'll conservatively grade it a 7.5 VF-. The Overstreet Guide says $28 is appropriate for this grade -- we say $21 plus our LOW shipping cost is even MORE appropriate -- and the very best price here on HipComic for this early SUB-MARINER!!
••• And there is no further postage charge if you buy additional items, so load up on some of our other Silver Age Marvels, if that's your thing!
