Item Description
In this issue, that interior color is devoted to Mike Weller, who provides a terrific four-pager about a down-and-out cartoonist who gets a chance to serve as an assistant inker for the hottest, most popular comic artist in the country (Bryan Talbot? Dave Gibbons? I can't tell from the story). Not surprisingly, the assistant cartoonist encounters his share of trouble in this hilarious—and probably true-to-life—adventure.Streetcomix #5 actually begins with a three-pager from a newcomer named Skip (can't find his last name) called "Deep Down Inside I Guess I'm Just a City Boy." The "boy" in "city boy" experiences a monstrous waking nightmare that grows more surreal and psychedelic the longer it goes on. It's solid work from a promising new talent.
Paul Fisher and Chris Welch team up for a four-pager called "Warbler & Yates," which is about a hot-tempered boss laying into a meek employee. It's more or less innocuous. Borin Van Loon follows with a two-pager about the demise of mankind and ascent of a new ruling class of life (so be kind to your dieffenbachia).
Luke Rainford, a former fan artist, gets six pages to demonstrate his chops in a professional environment, which he uses for a story about a cartoonist struggling to come up with an idea for a professional comic story. The cartoonist listens to the TV news channel in hopes of finding inspiration, but just when he hears an idea he can work with the idea itself does him in. It's a good concept, but Rainford's loose emulation of Bryan Talbot's drawing style, his awkward, flat compositions, and his weak lettering drains some of the impact of the story.
The back half of the book is kicked off by Nick Cavanagh with another two-page story about anthropomorphic birds in "The City Boys." This time one bird is determined to get his driver's license, which raises havoc at the driver's testing center. I'm still not buying Cavanagh stock, but his frenetic energy and slaptstick sensibility is a winning formula.
Mike Matthews makes his Streetcomix debut, and one of his earliest appearances anywhere, with the four-page "The Reluctant Rebel." It's about a robot named X-G2 that's part of a team of robots on a space ship that slave away at physical labor for their human astronauts. The robots are treated horribly by the humans, so the robots begin a revolt and start killing off the humans, which leads to an all-out war that X-G2 can't bear to witness. X-G2 finds a way to end the war, but at great personal cost. This certainly isn't in the same genre of deviant and hyper-violent comics Matthews normally produces, so it's something of a treat to see him take on a straightforward story.
After the Mr. Hepf article (in which he announces that the next issue of Streetcomix will feature a special "Is This Sexist?" theme), J.C. Moody returns with a seven-pager called "NSU, a Story with a Sting in the Tail." It's about a dude who catches the clap and goes to a local health clinic for treatment. While this story is as boldly illustrated and attention-grabbing as Moody's "Jimmy Young and the Bogeyman" in Streetcomix #4, it doesn't hit the peaks that "Bogeyman" did.
Streetcomix #5 is a slight step down from the previous two issues, but there's no reason—and no time—for panic. With only one issue to go, we remain confident that Streetcomix will bounce back strong and sail into the good night with a terrific finale. FROM COMIXJOINT The go to for understanding underground comix's
