Item Description
DEADMAN (who in life was Boston Brand) first appeared in STRANGE ADVENTURES #205 (October 1967), and was created by Arnold Drake and Carmine Infantino. Two issues later, the art chores were taken over by the artist best-known for his association with DEADMAN -- the masterly NEAL ADAMS! He illustrated the remaining 11 issues of DEADMAN's first story arc. Here in Adams' fourth installment of his DEADMAN saga, "Hide and Seek!", both written and illustrated by Adams himself, DEADMAN seeks to learn what has happened to the police detective assigned to his case. He discovers that the detective, Mike Riley, has been falsely accused of brutally beating a thief who had already surrendered to him, and has been kicked off the force.
DEADMAN, learning the low-lifes who accused Riley are Peter Bones and a hook-handed man named "Roy Martin", suspects this Martin of being the Hook who killed Boston Brand, and staging the frame-up to get Riley off his trail. DEADMAN enters Detective Riley's body, confronts Bones, and learns that he agreed to give false testimony along with Martin/the Hook in exchange for money to buy feed for his pet pigeons, the only companions he has left.
DEADMAN/Riley phones the police to pick up Bones and apprehend the Hook, but it is too late, as the Hook has killed Bones and fled. Riley is restored to his post as police detective, but DEADMAN has once again failed to apprehend his killer.
You also get the classic story, "Traveling Into The Past And Future!" by Pulp artist extraordinaire Virgil Finlay, as well as "Designs for Disaster" by Nick Cardy, in which a set designer's sets for a film cause tragedy to strike an entire town!
This is a well-preserved 55-year old Silver Age STRANGE ADVENTURES -- no creases, tears, pieces missing, or abnormal toning. The binding is strong, the colors are bright, and the cover is glossy! But there are stress lines, bumped corners, and a tiny tear on the back cover. We are very confidently grading this a 6.5 FN+ . . . which Overstreet values at $39 . . . but we're pricing it at just $28. . with our customary L•O•W shipping!
