The BLUE BEETLE has sure had a convoluted history! The original BLUE BEETLE was created by Fox Comics in the 1940s and later acquired by Charlton Comics. The first Beetle was Dan Garrett , who initially gained super powers from a special vitamin, which was later changed to gaining powers from a "sacred scarab". The original BLUE BEETLE as featured not only in his own comic but also a weekly radio serial.

The second BLUE BEETLE was created by Charlton and later taken over by DC Comics, the successor to Dan Garrett being Ted Kord. Kord "jumped" to the DC Comics universe during the Crisis on Infinite Earths alongside a number of other Charlton Comics characters. The second BLUE BEETLE later starred in his own 24 issue comic. Kord never had any super powers but used science to create various devices to help him fight crime. He became a member of the Justice League of America and was later killed during DC Comics' Infinite Crisis cross over.

This Vol.1 #1 issue is the Charlton incarnation of the character, with artwork by none other than Steve Ditko, who had recently left his Spider-Man gig at Marvel. Here, in a story that continues from Charlton's CAPTAIN ATOM #86, Ted Kord battles a gang of scuba-diving crooks who go by the moniker "The Squids". And Ditko also debuts his newest creation, THE QUESTION, in this issue too!

••• This copy of BLUE BEETLE #1 appears to belong to a rarer set of misprints! "A few thousand copies" of this issue were printed with captions missing from the last panels of the BLUE BEETLE and QUESTION stories. Presses were stopped and the captions were added for the rest of the print run.•••

This is a nice solid copy with typical wear and slight toning, but still tight and bright! A tiny triangle is missing from the upper right front cover. Overstreet says a 4.0VG like this should go for $42 . . . but we think $32 is more like it, and we're Ditko fans too! $2 shipping makes this a real bargain . . without QUESTION!
