* _SOME BACKSTORY ON THIS TYPE OF VARIANT: During this time period, most comics were sold at newsstands and featured a UPC on the front cover. Many publishers started experimenting with "direct editions," which were sold directly to stores at a discount. In order to distinguish between newsstand and direct editions, minor changes were often made to the covers. Many collectors use the catch-all term "Whitman variants" to describe the direct editions from this time period, though not all of these variants were technically distributed by Whitman. They are also sometimes referred to as "Diamond" variants (due to the diamond surrounding the price)._
