DC Comics had purchased FAWCETT COMICS specifically to be able to own the rights to the original CAPTAIN MARVEL, but the lawyers decided they could use the character but not title a comic book with that name!

So, in February 1973 they were able to bring back original artist C.C. Beck and once again have CAPTAIN MARVEL on the newsstands . . . this time under the title of SHAZAM!

Here, in the first issue with the good captain in over 25 years, with a script by Denny O'Neill, is ". . In The Beginning . . ", in which CAPTAIN MARVEL returns to Earth after having gone missing for decades! As Billy Batson, he recalls his origin: the aging wizard Shazam draws him to the Rock of Eternity to grant the boy near limitless power and be a champion of the oppressed, transforming into CAPTAIN MARVEL simply by uttering "SHAZAM!" The wizard immediately dies but promises that he can still help guide the hero as a ghost if he returns to this secret chamber and petitions him. He resolves to find Doctor Sivana.

In the second story, "The World's Wickedest Plan!", CAPTAIN MARVEL escapes the trap that Dr. Sivana had created that caused the Marvel Family to be placed in suspended animation for the last 25 years.

You also get a 1-page history of the character by DC 'Historian' E. Nelson Bridwell, and a 7-page story from 1946 by creatives Otto Binder and Pete Costanza titled "The Endless String". CAPTAIN MARVEL follows a stray piece of string that leads through a dimensional portal to the kingdom of Zoozland!

This is a near-pristine copy of one of the surprise titles of 1973 - the first issue in an initial 35-issue run. The binding is strong, the pages are supple and bright, there are no splits, tears, separations, or pieces missing - a terrific part of any SHAZAM! collection! It's the best and most affordable #1 here on HipComic!
