'Sandman is Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams. He is a member of the family of the Endless, along with Desire, Despair, Destiny and others. This provides a very broad setting for the telling of fantasy stories, and the comic makes good use of it. The seventy-five-issue run mixes single-issue short stories and longer storylines of six issues and more, covering horror, humour, family drama, metaphysics...you name it - as long as you name horror twice, since it was particularly dominant in the beginning, frequently to scorching effect. It's a comic crammed with ideas and a large cast of memorable characters, who are given some great dialogue (particularly Delirium), and Neil Gaiman writes with an impressive command of styles and techniques. Add to this the artwork to match and amplify, and at its best it is a startling, invigorating read.' 'The culmination of the Grand Scheme occurs in "The Kindly Ones" (57-69), with nifty artwork, principally by Marc Hempel. The boy Daniel is missing in ominous circumstances, and his mother, Lyta, embarks on a delirious mission to find him or seek vengeance. Tons of ideas and clever sequences, but it seems to go on forever. Still, you probably have to read it just to say you have, and to put your mind at rest.
