DC's SANDMAN of the 1970s was not the Wesley Dodd of Earth One in the Golden Age, but rather a new character created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby - their last-ever collaboration of their long careers. Issue #1 was intended as a one-shot, but five more issues followed. Here is the first issue with pencils by Kirby, and inks by one of his favorite embellishers - Mike Royer.

This SANDMAN was originally intended to be the actual Sandman of popular myth, "eternal and immortal", despite his superhero-like appearance and adventures. The Sandman is assisted by two living nightmares named Brute and Glob, whom he releases from domed cells with the help of a magic whistle. Using security monitoring devices, the Sandman can enter the "Dream Stream" or the "Reality Stream" (in which he acts like the superhero he looks like), and he carries a pouch of dream dust with which he can cause anyone to sleep and dream.

Here in the story titled "General Electric", when a boy named Jed Walker has a strange dream of a drowning man who appears in reality to give him an evil little doll, it spurs the SANDMAN to emerge from the 'Dream Stream' into the real world to stop the plans of GENERAL ELECTRIC, a maniacal scientist who had plagued WONDER WOMAN for many years!.

This is a great-looking copy of one of Kirby's creations while at DC in the early 1970s. The binding is strong, the pages are supple and bright, there are no splits, tears, separations, or pieces missing - a terrific part of any Kirby collection!
