Item Description

RED SONJA, the 'She Devil With a Sword", was famously created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith in 1973, partially based on Robert E. Howard's character Red Sonya of Rogatino, a female swashbuckler from his 1934 short story "The Shadow of the Vulture". Shedebuted in CONAN THE BARBARIAN#23 in 1973 in which Thomas created a new origin story and transposed the timeline from the 16th century of Howard's original RED SONYA to the Hyborian Age, another Howard creation, in order to have the comic-book RED SONJA interact with CONAN. In 1975, the first issue of RED SONJA debuted.

Here in that first issue, Roy Thomas scripts "The Blood of the Unicorn!", and gives the illustration reins to Frank Thorne (well known for his depictions of female heroines). In the story, RED SONJA comes upon a warlord and his brutes attacking a UNICORN, and cruelly cutting off its horn for its supposedly magic powers. She leaps into the fray and frees the Unicorn, and rides off on it as the villains cower.

The warlord has her tracked, and with his soldiers captures RED SONJA. But just as she is about to be killed, the Unicorn gores to death the warlord with its restored horn, saving RED SONJA. Though forever grateful, she realizes the Unicorn is not meant to be 'kept' and she lets it run free.

This copy of RED SONJA #1 looks great for its age of 47 years, with glossy covers, supple pages, and good color. The binding is strong. No abnormal toning, and no tears, chips, stress lines or creases. We call it an 8.0 VF.
