Item Description
Walt Kelly created the characters of Pogo Possum and Albert Alligator in 1941 for issue No. 1 of Dell's "ANIMAL COMICS" soon after leaving the Walt Disney Studio where he had been an up & coming animator. He loved having the creative freedom that his swamp characters provided him; "nature's screechers" as he called them.Albert Alligator was the original main character, but unassuming 'everyman' character Pogo Possum became the lead character before long.
Here is the 7th issue of 16 - the run of which show Kelly's maturing and detailed style becoming ever more beautiful! These 36 pages feature 6 stories of varying lengths, titled with Kelly's punderful way with words: "Hickory Dickory Parlory Phoo!", "150 Watts Cookin?", etc! In addition to Pogo and Albert, Howland Owl, Porky Pine and Churchy LaFemme are present, along with the other denizens of the Okeefenokee Swamp!
There is a small pen marking on the front cover of this otherwise beautiful copy, which brings its grade down to a 5.0 VG/FN.
