Walt Kelly created the characters of Pogo Possum and Albert Alligator in 1941 for issue No. 1 of Dell's "ANIMAL COMICS", soon after leaving the Walt Disney Studio where he had been an up & coming animator. He loved having the creative freedom that his swamp characters provided him; "nature's screechers" as he called them.

Albert Alligator was the original main character, but unassuming 'everyman' character Pogo Possum became the lead character before long.

Here is the 10th issue of 16 - the run of which shows Kelly's maturing and detailed style becoming ever more beautiful! These 52 pages feature 9 stories of varying lengths, titled with Kelly's punderful way with words: "Lulu Red Ridey Hoops", "Down With the Sea and Ships", "The Epic Cure", "Mother's Gooseberry Rinds" and etc! In addition to Pogo and Albert, chums Howland Owl, Porky Pine and Churchy LaFemme are present, along with the other denizens of the Okeefenokee Swamp!

Kelly even did the text page illustrations here, which were usually assigned to other Dell artists!

This is an outstandingly beautiful copy, and we conservatively grade it a 7.0 FN/VF. There are no blemishes or defects we can see. It is tight, and squared, and the interior color is great!
