A breath of fresh air and a big game-changer for DC, The NEW TEEN TITANS began publication in 1980 and started a tidal wave of positive fan reaction. DC first revived the TEEN TITANS team of kid sidekicks from the 1960s as seen in the pages of DC COMICS PRESENTS #26. Joining the new team was the former Doom Patrol associate known as Beast Boy (now calling himself CHANGELING), and three entirely new characters: RAVEN, STARFIRE, and CYBORG. These new heroes united with former team members ROBIN, KID FLASH and WONDER GIRL . . . and the new group gained increasing popularity and huge sales with each successive issue.

Here in their second ANNUAL issue, scripted by Marv Wolfman and fan favorite artist George Pérez, the focus turns to spotlight the then-recently introduced character of VIGILANTE. A district attorney and later judge in New York City, Adrian Chase lost his wife and children to mafia violence. It turned him into a violent underworld avenger, primarily working against Boss Anthony Scarapelli. He spiraled further and further into lawlessness and vigilantism, and after several failed attempts to quit took his own life.

But back to 1983 in the story "The Murder Machine", Judge Adrian Chase is targeted by mob boss Anthony Scarpelli for presiding over his corruption trial. The Teen Titans protect him, but are attacked by minions sent by Scarapelli. Judge Chase later dons the guise of VIGILANTE and aids the TITANS, unbeknowst to them, as he assassinates each villain they are fighting. Eventually Scarapelli is apprehended by the TITANS and faces true justice, while Chase is made by the feds to 'disappear' for a new life.

This is a great-looking 52-page copy is one of the key issues of DC's Bronze Age resurgence.
