JACK KIRBY's arrival at DC was the biggest comics news of 1970!  I remember the excitement and speculation about just what he would do with the established DC characters . . . or new ones born of his limitless imagination!  Here is his fifth issue of MISTER MIRACLE, a breath of fresh air at DC as Kirby started painting his 'Fourth World' canvas.

This issue follows the development of Kirby's "FOURTH WORLD" concept which introduced the New Gods and their nemesis DARKSEID. MISTER MIRACLE himself is actually SCOTT FREE, a Prince of NEW GENESIS, who was unaware of his heritage, and escaped from his harsh upbringing on APOKOLIPS and fled to Earth.

Here in issue #5 - in a big 52 pages of Kirby story - you get "Murder Machine", both written and drawn by Kirby, which tells of when BIG BARDA, MISTER MIRACLE's's lover and friend from APOKOLIPS, is kidnaped by VIRMAN VUNDABAR!  To rescue her, MISTER MIRACLE must submit to being put in VUNDABAR's Murder Machine.

You also get a reprint of a Kirby and Simon BOY COMMANDOS tale from DETECTIVE COMICS #76 from 1942!  In New York City the Boy Commandos get abducted by a gang of Nazis. The team's fans, calling themselves the Kid Commandos, team up with the Sandman and Sandy, and with the Newsboy Legion, to defeat this gang and rescue the Commandos.

Additionally, you get a 4-page 'Young Scot Free' story wherein Scot is imprisoned by GRANNY GOODNESS and is astonished to see METRON phasing in with his Mobius Chair to offer help!

This is a great-looking copy of one part of the foundational issues of Kirby's 'Fourth World' opus. The binding is strong, the pages are supple and bright, there are no real flaws that we can see.  We conservatively grade this handsome key issue an 8.0 VF.

Overstreet values this issue in this condition at $33.  But we're willing to part with it for $25, with our always-low shipping of just $2.
