Item Description
JACK KIRBY's arrival at DC was the biggest comics news of 1970! I remember the excitement and speculation about just what he would do with the established DC characters . . . or new ones born of his limitless imagination! Here is his fourth issue of MISTER MIRACLE, a breath of fresh air at DC as Kirby started painting his 'Fourth World' canvas. This issue follows the development of Kirby's "FOURTH WORLD" concept which introduced the New Gods and their nemesis Darkseid. MISTER MIRACLE himself is actually SCOTT FREE, a Prince of NEW GENESIS, who was unaware of his heritage, and escaped from his harsh upbringing on APOKOLIPS and fled to Earth.
Here in issue #4 - in a big 52 pages of story - you get "The Closing Jaws of Death!", both written and drawn by Kirby, which tells of when BIG BARDA, MISTER MIRACLE's's lover and friend from APOKOLIPS, arrives on Earth to help him escape from Dr. Bedlam's trap. An early quote from BARDA is, "_I'm not so bad. A little ROUGH, maybe -- but once you get to KNOW me -- I can be a real pussycat!" _
You also get a reprint of a Kirby and Simon BOY COMMANDOS tale from DETECTIVE COMICS #82 from 1943! In "The Romance of Rip Carter!", the Boy Commandos fail in their mission to blow up a railway tunnel, but the plane that was carrying them (named after Kirby's wife Rosalind!) manages to destroy the tunnel without any crew aboard.
There is also a short 4-page 'biography' of the pirate Jean Lafitte and his warning of the Americans that the British planned on invading New Orleans! Also written and drawn by Jack Kirby!
This is a great-looking copy of one part of the foundational issues of Kirby's 'Fourth World' opus. The binding is strong, the pages are supple and bright, there are no real flaws that we can see. We conservatively grade this handsome key issue an 8.0 VF.
Overstreet values this issue in this condition at $112!!. But we're willing to part with it for just $55, with our always-low shipping of just $2.
ESCAPE into the excitement of Jack Kirby's Fourth World!
