JACK KIRBY's arrival at DC was the biggest comics news of 1970! I remember the excitement and speculation about just what he would do with the established DC characters . . . or new ones born of his limitless imagination! Here is his debut issue of MISTER MIRACLE, a breath of fresh air at DC as Kirby started painting his 'Fourth World' canvas.

This issue is one of the key issues of the Bronze Age era, as it foreshadows the development of Kirby's "FOURTH WORLD" concept which introduced the New Gods and their nemesis Darkseid. MISTER MIRACLE himself is actually SCOTT FREE, a Prince of NEW GENESIS, who was unaware of his heritage, and escaped from his harsh upbringing on APOKOLIPS and fled to Earth.

Here in issue #1 you get "Murder Missile Trap!", wherein a young SCOTT FREE comes upon Thaddeus Brown, an escape artist who bills himself as Mr. Miracle, and his assistant Oberon. When the two are abruptly attacked by thugs, SCOTT pitches in and helps defeat the gangsters. Later, Thaddeus Brown is shot by a sniper and SCOTT FREE akes over the identity of MR. MIRACLE. Oberon becomes the new MR. MIRACLE's assistant, and SCOTT promises to continue Thaddeus Brown's escape-artist career.

Kirby both wrote it and illustrated it! There is also a one-page interview with Kirby, written by Mark Wolfman!

This is a great-looking copy of one of the foundational issues of Kirby's 'Fourth World' opus. The binding is strong, the pages are supple and bright, there are no real flaws that we can see - other than a small puncture/tear at the top of the back cover. That flaw alone lowers our conservative grade of this otherwise near-pristine copy to an 8.0 VF.

Overstreet values this issue in this condition at $85. It's the only copy available of MISTER MIRACLE #1 here on HipComic, and we're willing to part with it for just $68, with our always- L•O•W!
