MASTERS of the UNIVERSE, a hugely impactful media influence on young boys in the early 1980s, began somewhat quietly with MATTEL's unheralded introduction of an array of 5 1/2" action figures in 1981, each character accompanied by a mini-comic with biographical info and a short adventure story. The blond HE-MAN and the evil SKELETOR emerged as the primary adversaries (and favorite toys) in the fictional land of Eternia.

DC jumped on the bandwagon a year later with the first full-size comic book adventures of these varied heroes and villains that kids were playing with all over the country! These comics pre-dated the earth-shaking arrival and enormous popularity if the syndicated FILMATION animated series.

Here are the first two issues of DC's mini-series, with story by Paul Kupperberg and art by George Tuska and Alfredo Alcala. Set in a hybrid world of sword and sorcery and technological sci-fi, HE-MAN attles with SKELETOR to prevent him from conquering Eternia and discovering the secrets of Castle Grayskull&mdasha mysterious ancient fortress with a skull-shaped facade, containing great power and magic.

Surprisingly good story and artwork!
