Item Description
Here's a glimpse back to the early 1970s - we see the birth of not only an American Indian hero, but the birth of Marvel's best-known 'Tryout Title': MARVEL SPOTLIGHT!In the Fall of 1971 Stan Lee and Roy Thomas both thought it would be great to re-introduce a Western comic into their line-up, but they needed an inexpensive way to test fan reaction and the viability of an ongoing title. They dreamt up MARVEL SPOTLIGHT, and kicked it off with the mysterious Old West hero, RED WOLF. This first SPOTLIGHT issue sported a cover by Neal Adams, with Syd Shores handling the interior art (as he would on the first 2 RED WOLF issues). Gardner Fox wrote the story, simply titled "Red Wolf" where we are introduced to the masked hero of the plains who, along with his familiar, Lobo the Wolf, fight injustice and attempt to promote peace between the Native Americans and settlers. Neal Adams was a good choice for this introductory cover!
Only 6 months later, the first issue of RED WOLF appeared on the stands, and continued the story started in MARVEL SPOTLIGHT. In "A Thunder of War Drums" , Ranchers try to chase Native Americans off their land, and end up killing them. One of those Indians was the chief's son. Red Wolf takes the murderer to Fort Rango to stand trial, but the judge dismisses the only witness as inadmissibl and releases the murderer. Red Wolf predicts that these events will lead to war. This time around, Gil Kane was the choice as cover artist for issues 1 & 2, and Syd Shores continued his illustrating duties!
In RED WOLF #2, Fox writes "Day of the Dynamite Doom" wherein Red Wolf tracks down a band of outlaws who plan to steal a shipment of dynamite, and along the way he tries to save a lost girl who resists his attempts to help her because of her prejudice against Indians.
All three of these issues are in great shape, with glossy covers, strong bindings, lightly toned pages, and no tears, splits, or pieces missing. We're conservatively grading them an aggregate 7.5 VF- . . . which Overstreet totals up at $60. We're going to let you ride away with them for only $26 . . plus our L•O•W shipping!!
If you are a Western Comics fan (and we know there aren't many of you out there) these are not to be missed!
