Here's an odd one . . so odd, in fact, that it's the only copy available here on HipComic!

MARVEL ILLUSTRATED: THE SWIMSUIT ISSUE #1 was a magazine-styled comic-magazine published by Marvel Comics in 1991 that was the predecessor to 'The Marvel Swimsuit Special' series that appeared annually until 1995. A parody of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, the series featured pin-ups of Marvel Comics characters in swimwear.

This issue, which primarily catered to adolescent fanboys, featured pin-up style illustrations of characters from Marvel's main franchises, including the Avengers, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and others. The tone was broadly tongue-in-cheek and humorous, rather than explicitly erotic. Both male and female characters were included. MARVEL ILLUSTRATED: THE SWIMSUIT ISSUE #1, featured multiple parody advertisements, fake interviews with various Marvel characters, and actual sports-themed articles, though these sections were removed or scaled back in subsequent issues.

Artists depicting bikinis to the best of their abilities in this issue include George Perez, Walt Simonson, John Buscema, Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, John Romita Jr. and Paul Ryan. The 'centerfold' features Joe Jusko's painting of Mary Jane Watson!
