BASIL WOLVERTON was the acclaimed master of 'Appealingly Ugly' caricatures/cartoons, and vaulted to fame in 1946 when he was chosen as the winner of a contest run by AL CAPP in his LI'L ABNER comic strip, asking for illustrations of LENA HYENA, "The World's Ugliest Woman"! Though he had been employed steadily as a Comic Book artist for over a decade, it was his notoriety as the creator of LENA HYENA that solidified his fame as a 'grotesqueries' cartoonist, and landing gigs at MAD Magazine, Marvel Comics, and even LIFE magazine!

Here is the 1996 one-shot, LENA's BAMBINAS, compiled and written by Basil Wolverton's son Monte Wolverton, who contributes a wonderfully interesting and scholarly treatise on the history of 'Ugliness' in humankind's art through the ages!

He then creates 22 nicely humorous but accurate poems to accompany full page enlargements of his father's 22 drawings of Lena the Hyena's children! Plus her pet!

This is a great trove of Wolverton art for the fan of his work on everything from LIFE magazine covers to the TOPPS trading card series of 'Ugly Posters'!

This one-shot issue is in near-pristine condition, with sturdy cardstock covers and white pages. Overstreet doesn't list this Fantagraphics publication, for some reason, but we think $6 is a fair asking price for this 28-year old novelty . . . with our incredibly-L•O•W shipping as a bonus!!
