Item Description
Kull the Conqueror was a fictional character created by writer Robert E. Howard in 1929. KULL was a more introspective character than Howard's subsequent creation, Conan the Barbarian, whose first appearance was in a re-write of a rejected Kull story.MARVEL acquired the rights to publish KULL as a comic when they obtained the rights to CONAN from the Howard estate. His first series was written by Roy Thomas and drawn by Marie Severin and her brother John Severin. Here is the third Marvel issue, from the Summer of 1972.
In "The Death Dance of Thulsa Doom", beautifully illustrated by the Severins in a style akin to Hal Foster's 'Prince Valiant' comic strip, the story begins with KULL, slightly suspicious of THULSA DOOM, who is a guest in his court; but is in disguise. It isn't until KULL's courtesan Shiva attempts to steal his powerful Serpent's Eye gem, while ensorceled, that he becomes outright convinced of THULSA DOOM's villainy.
KULL openly confronts THULSA DOOM with his suspicions, and DOOM gives up his human disguise and appears as a skull-headed man. KULL is quickly swept up in hallucinations of DOOM's making, and eventually turns over the gem willingly to what he believes is his wise man Ka-Nu, but is in fact THULSA DOOM in disguise. The finale takes place before the entire assembled court of Valusia!
Lots of arcane sorcery and magical violence in an ancient epoch! All in a day's work for KING KULL!
This is a really nice, great-looking and solid copy of KULL THE CONQUEROR #3, with a strong binding, glossy covers, supple pages and bright color. The pages have very little toning for a 50-year-old comic, and no foxing . . but there is the tiniest of nicks out of the top of the front cover that lower this from a better grade. Overstreet offers a value of $9 for a 7.5 FN- copy . . . but we think $5 is a more reasonable price! And we haven't seen anyone else offering to ship KULL THE CONQUEROR $3 for just $2 . . with FREE SHIPPING for any additional purchases!
