Item Description
Right about in the middle of their hugely successful run of CONAN THE BARBARIAN (275 issues between 1970 and 1993), Marvel Comics introduced another title based on the famed works of pulp writer and novelist Robert E. Howard -- KING CONAN!The writer who had guided CONAN through ten years of adventures by this time, Roy Thomas, knew REH's CONAN works backwards and forwards, and was aware that long after Howard's death, books had been written and published with the fursther adventures of CONAN as a King, which was hinted at by Howard before his untimely death in 1936.
And so was born Marvel's KING CONAN - a big 52-page title that appeared just 4 times a year (allowing the amazing John Buscema to illustrate both CONAN the BARBARIAN and this new series!).
The opening pages of issue #1 from Spring 1980 offered a fantastic tableau of CONAN's life - from the marauding and hard-living wandering rogue of Cimmeria, to his eventual coronation as King of Aquilonia in the late Hyborean Age! Thomas adapts the story "The Witch of the Mists" from the story by writers L. Sprague DeCamp and Lin Carter.
The 36-page story tells how KING CONAN OF AQUILONIA is hunting with PRINCE CONN, his teenaged son and heir, when the boy is captured by a band of Hyperborean warlocks, servants of the witch queen Louhi, as bait to lure CONAN into a trap.
CONAN travels north to Hyperborea for the first time in 60 years and fights his way through desolate country, battling flesh-eating swamp people and braving near-starvation. He crosses the Hyperborean border, marked with a gigantic rune-inscribed skull, and ultimately finds and confronts Louhi. He is able to free his son from the witch, but discovers in the process that his arch-enemy, the Stygian sorcerer THOTH-AMON is the evil mastermind behind the plot!
This copy of KING CONAN #1 looks great for its age of 43 years, with semi-glossy covers, supple pages, and good color. The binding is strong on this 52-page issue and still nicely squared. No abnormal toning, and no tears, chips, stress lines or creases. Overstreet values an 8.0 VF copy at $11. Our price is even better than that -- just $8 . . with our customary $2 shipping, giving you the best price here on HipComic!
It's a great deal on this terrific story and art from 1980!
