Item Description
Here is the issue that introduced SWAMP THING to the world! The original Silver Age HOUSE OF SECRETS ran 80 issues, from November of 1956 to September of 1966. It lay dormant for three years, but was resurrected in 1969 with issue #81 and a host named Abel (whose brother, Cain, was the host of sister-title HOUSE OF MYSTERY).Of the four stories in this issue, it was the 8-page tale, "SWAMP THING" that received the most acclaim, and led to one of DC's best creations getting his own comic just 13 months later. Created by writer Len Wein, who claimed he thought up the character while looking at the trash in the subway car in which he was riding, and designed and brought to life by celebrated artist Bernie Wrightson, 'SWAMP THING' tells the early 20th century tale of Alex Olsen, who returns to seek vengeance on the man who 'killed' him in an explosion in order to be with Alex's wife! He gruesomely eliminates his rival, but finds his wife horrified and repelled by him, and he broken-heartedly trudges back off to the swamp that rejuvenated him.
The cover by Wrightson features the image of Alex Olsen's wife -- inspired by the model who sat for him: the future Louise Simonson, who was married to artist Jeff Jones at the time!
Also in this issue are stories by Jack Kirby, Joe Orlando, Gerry Conway, Dick Dillin and Tony DeZuñiga.
This is a great looking copy, with a strong binding, supple pages, minimal toning, and no tears, stress lines, or pieces missing. We grade it a solid 8.0 VF. For this grade for this key issue, Overstreet values it at $1070 . . . but we're pricing it at just $1020 . . with FREE shipping!
It's no SECRET that this is a great deal!
