HOMER THE HAPPY GHOST - born in 1955 as a TIMELY/ATLAS answer to the popularity of the very similar Casper THE FRIENDLY GHOST - was the creation of the then-staff writer STAN LEE, and the very popular, and later revered, artist of the ARCHIE COMICS, DAN DeCARLO.In all respects, he was just a more mischievous, and adventurous version of CASPER, with a decidedly weirder 'posse', but never matched CASPER's wide appeal, and lasted just 22 issues.

Jump ahead 10 years, with the same STAN LEE now Editor-in-Chief of MARVEL COMICS.LEE was looking for easy additional titles he could add to MARVEL's production schedule, and he decided to revive HOMER . . however, he rather nefariously and disingenuously featured his own name on each story, but omitted giving any credit to his co-creator, DAN DeCARLO.

Here is HOMER THE HAPPY GHOST #1 from 1969, featuring 8 short funny ghostly stories across its 36 pages, all reprints from issue #18 of the original run.  Besides HOMER, also involved are ZELDA the Scatter-Brained Witch, GOBBY the Greedy Goblin, MORTON the Mixed-up Ghost, his girlfriend ALICE, and DUGAN - a pretty uncamouflaged rip-off of Casper's friend SPOOKY . . . right down to the derby he wears! All the stories were written by LEE with fun, kid-centric art by DeCARLO.

There's even one story where HOMER and his pals are upset with the way they are depicted in the comic, and make their way to New York to present their grievances to STAN LEE and DAN DeCARLO!!

This is a near-perfect copy of Marvel's HOMER THE HAPPY GHOST #1, with a strong binding, glossy covers, supple pages with good color and no toning.  There is an unobtrusive date stamp on the back cover. It's such an uncommon title among MARVEL collectors that the Overstreet Price Guide values an 8.0 VF copy at $86!
