'After the Hawks were nullified in Zero Hour, the DC Universe was without a Hawkman or Hawkwoman for some time. A new incarnation of Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders, grand-niece of the 1940's heroine) was introduced as a member of the JSA's 1999 relaunch. 24-26 of that series, debuted the new Hawkman, a smoother remix of the old versions with no problem integrating his various memories, was returned to activity, and launched into a fourth eponymous title shortly thereafter. Harking back to the first versions of the characters in 1940's Flash Comics, the pair now established, in all their previous manifestations, as avatars of an ancient Egyptian prince and princess. They were slain by a high priest and destined to be reborn and fall in love time after time until their karmic balance is regained. Now based in the city of St. Roch, the Hawks are exploring the boundaries of their relationship. The twist is that due to an irregularity in the reincarnation process, this version of Hawkgirl isn't automatically in love with him, and it isn't at all sure she even wants to know! The theme of reincarnation worked confusingly against the previous version of the character, but is being skillfully played by writers Geoff Johns and James Robinson. There are frequent, but not excessive, flashbacks to earlier embodiments of the pair, including some familiar faces from more obscure recesses of the DC universe.
