Soon after the success of his first movie in 1934, GENE AUTRY, possibly the biggest Western star of his day, became a comics character - first appearing in the comic strip "_Gene Autry Rides"_ by Till Goodan in 1939, and then in comic books that bore his name, initially published by Fawcett Comics and then picked up by Dell Comics that ran 12 issues. Dell then published 101 issues of GENE AUTRY COMICS from 1946 to 1955. That title was changed to GENE AUTRY AND CHAMPION, and ran an additional 20 issues from 1955 to 1959, making it the longest-running (by number of issues) cowboy-actor comic book.

Here is a nice copy of GENE AUTRY COMICS #1 from 1946 under the DELL banner. Its 52 pages contain two long stories of 21 and 28 pages - one drawn by Jesse Marsh, the other by Ken Jackson. In the first, Gene foils the plans of a gang of counterfeiters, in the other, he gets the better of a gang of bushwhackers! He was a busy cowboy -- and a good one!

This is a pretty nice-looking copy of a comic that is 75 years old -- there are stress lines, a bit of scuffing and small knicks on the cover, plus a small and almost unnoticeable subscription fold separation, as well as a very light pencil notation along the top of the front cover. But the pages are all well-bound, with minimal toning, no ragged edges and bright colors. We feel confident in grading it conservatively at a 6.0 FN. Overstreet says that condition merits a price tag of $105 . . . but our price tag says $88 . . along with FREE SHIPPING!
