Very little information is available on Seaboard Publishers of NYC or their 5-issue run of comics under the banner of 'Famous Authors Illustrated'.  But here is a nice copy of their very first comic - an adaptation by James Lavery of "The Scarlet Pimpernel", the well-known novel by Baroness Emma Orczy, first published in 1905.

It tells the story of Sir Percy Blakeney, an English gentleman by day, and an avenging angel by night who saved the lives of many aristocrats facing the guillotine during France's Reign of Terror.

Seemingly nothing more than a wealthy fop, he was in reality a formidable swordsman and a quick-thinking master of disguise and an escape artist. The band of gentlemen who assist him are the only ones who knew of his secret identity. He was known only by his symbol, a simple flower, the SCARLET PIMPERNEL!

Lavery supplied the cover art and all interior illustrations in a clean and simple style. The intent behind the Seaboard line may have been much like Classics Illustrated or even Cliffs Notes - offering young students an easy way to absorb the classics.

This is a nicely clean and solid 74-year old comic - the binding is strong,  and no blemishes that affect the artwork in any way. Just  the slightest bit of 7-decade toning.  We conservatively grade this very hard-to-find comic a 6.0 FN.   Overstreet cites this grade at $102 . . but you can grab it  from us for just $80 plus FREE shipping.
