As told by Stan Lee, and beautifully rendered by the great John Buscema, it's the story of NORRIN-RAD, an inhabitant of the distant world ZENN-LA. Though he deeply loved SHALLA-BAL, he was growing restless with his life on ZENN-LA.

The ZENN-LAVIANS' lives were complacent, not looking to discover more about the universe around them. NORRIN RADD was not happy with this fact and when the planet-eating being GALACTUS appeared, he saw this as his chance to save his planet and seek a new life.

GALACTUS offered a deal and made NORRIN-RAD his herald, and he became the SILVER SURFER. ZENN-LA was saved, a new life was won, but his old life, his home and his true love had to be left behind.
