The NYPD is alerted to an alien space ship crash landing in the East River. It's alien pilot turns out to be too much for them to handle so they defer the situation to the Fantastic Four. It turns out this encounter with an alien creature from the Fantastic Four's past is merely a ruse to lure the quartet into a Skrull trap. The Fantastic Four find themselves in the midst of a Skrull power struggle, and their battle takes them to a Skrull power station where they run into the Avengers. Despite their combined forces, the power-mad Skrull who has commandeered the station unleashes an experimental weapon which robs all Skrulls in the universe of their shape-shifting abilities.

Note; This issue ties in with The Avengers Annual no. 14, which continues from Avengers no. 260. The Avengers' story continues in The Avengers no. 261. Eight pages at the end of this story are the same 8 pages in the Avengers annual.
