We are offering Famous Funnies #50 from September 1938 in this listing. It is filled with historic material, including Buck Rogers, Oaky Doaks, Dickie Dare, and the Black maid Lucindy. What we find most important historically, however, is the inside front cover, which is essentially a full color, full page superhero pin-up portrait of THE PHANTOM MAGICIAN in costume! This is important for many reasons, including the fact that The Phantom Magician was apparently the second comic book superhero, and because this is, so far as we can tell, the first ever SUPERHERO pin-up in a comic book! The editor, Stephen Douglas, even noted in #43 that many Famous Funnies readers were hanging these "colored portraits" (which were part of a series) on "the walls of their rooms." Douglas himself recommended in FF #48 that readers mount the pictures first and then hang them on their walls! We have found Famous Funnies #50 to be rare, which is quite understandable when one realizes that the editor is recommending that the readers cut the front cover off the book. CONDITION: is very attractive. There are some folds on the cover (apparently from careful reading - these generally do not break the color), plus a few "finger smudges" (not at all bad), and a professional 1" tear seal on an interior page (which will keep the tear from getting worse). The cover colors are still brilliant, and the interior pages are a remarkable off-white to white, with virtually no sign of aging (OWL 8 to 9). Overall, we grade this book as an exceptionally attractive VERY GOOD/VERY GOOD+.For collectors seeking key 1930's superhero comics, this is a remarkable, and rarely seen, book.
