The original DOOM PATROL first appeared in 1963 and was created by writers Arnold Drake and Bob Haney, along with artist Bruno Premiani. DOOM PATROL has appeared in different incarnations in multiple series, being published nearly continuously for over 57 years! Their creation predated MARVEL's development of the somewhat similar 'X-MEN' and 'FANTASTIC FOUR'.

They are a band of super-powered misfits whose "gifts" caused them alienation and trauma, just like the above-mentioned MARVEL properties. Since the original team was 'killed off' in 1968 there have been six DOOM PATROL series, with ROBOTMAN as the only character to appear in all of them.

Here are the first and second issues of the fourth series starring the DOOM PATROL, from 2004, when DC handed the title's reins to writer and artist John Byrne for a complete reboot! He opted to base his tales of the group on his colleague Chris Claremont's "The Tenth Circle" story arc in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA. Byrne's version of the PATROL lasted just 18 issues with the line-up he formed: Elasti-Girl; Faith; Grunt; Negative Man; Nudge; and Robotman; with their leader The Chief [Dr. Niles Caulder].

Here, in "Baptism of Blood" and "Heart of Darkness", the team battles WORMHOLE, CRUCIFER and assorted Vampires! . . . with cameo appearances by BATMAN, GREEN LANTERN, FLASH and MARTIAN MANHUNTER of the JLA.
