The original Doom Patrol first appeared in 1963 and was created by writers Arnold Drake and Bob Haney, along with artist Bruno Premiani. Doom Patrol has appeared in different incarnations in multiple series, being published nearly continuously for over 55 years! Their creation predated MARVEL's development of the somewhat similar 'X-MEN' and 'FANTASTIC FOUR'.

They are a band of super-powered misfits whose "gifts" caused them alienation and trauma, just like the above-mentioned MARVEL properties. Since the original team was 'killed off' in 1968 there have been six DOOM PATROL series, with ROBOTMAN as the only character to appear in all of them.

Here in the first issue of the third series about the DOOM PATROL, writer John Arcudi and artist Tan Eng Huat provide a new look and a valid reason for this new group. As this untitled story begins, we see a new hero group called Justice, Inc. trying to save passengers on a plane that has crashed in the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. . . and doing a pretty lousy job of it!

The focus switches to Cliff Steele, now working in a sulfur plant, performing jobs that are less hazardous for his robotic body. On his way home from work, Cliff stops a runaway car from hitting a group of people, and Thayer Jost sees the newspaper story about the deed, and pays Cliff a visit at the sulfur plant. Jost offers Cliff a job, running Justice, Inc.

Cliff goes to Justice, Inc. headquarters and learns about their Holo-Training center (which is where the team actually was when they tried to save the plane passengers earlier). Cliff is introduced to each of the team members and he begins training each of them at how better to use their abilities. They become the new DOOM
