MAN-BAT, Batman's tragically misunderstood sometimes enemy/occasional ally, makes his first two appearances here in DETECTIVE COMICS #400 and #402 from the summer of 1970. Inside covers by NEAL ADAMS, we learn the story of Zoologist KIRK LANGSTROM's research on the advanced auditory capabilities of bats, and his desire to help humans with hearing loss with his findings. He drinks a serum he has isolated from bat hormones . . . and finds himself unexpectedly turned into MAN-BAT!

Langstrom and BATMAN soon cross paths, and after an initial misunderstanding of the other's intent, they work together to take down a criminal gang, before MAN-BAT disappears.

In issue #402, BATMAN and MAN-BAT are again thrown together unintentionally, and this time Langstrom actually develops bat wings, somewhat to his horror! He manages to find his way to a cliff cave, and from there into the BATCAVE, surprising BATMAN and leading to further scuffles before they part ways, wary of each other, but with the beginnings of a bond.

We also meet the love of Kirk Langstrom's life, Francine Lee, in #402.

There are back-up stories in each of these issues centered around Hudson University, where Dick Grayson is a student. The first involves Barbara Gordon/BATGIRL doing a little sleuthing on campus . . . and the second finds Roy Harper/SPEEDY visiting Dick and giving rise to Dick's conflicting feelings about his role as ROBIN.

You get the bounty of NEAL ADAMS' artwork on both lead stories, and GIL KANE's talent on the back-ups!
