Item Description
BATMAN's first published appearance was in DC's DETECTIVE COMICS #27 in May of 1939. Here, 30 years later - 360 months of continual appearances - is DETECTIVE COMICS #387, a milestone that only a few comic book titles had achieved at that time!Beyond the celebratory cover by Irv Novick, is a dual presentation of both that initial story in DETECTIVE COMICS #27 by a teen-aged Bob Kane, and a new presentation of the same plot from teen-aged Mike Friedrich and illustrator Bob Brown. The 1969 version of 1939's "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" is re-presented as "The Cry of the Night is "Sudden Death!" , and - like its predecessor - concerns the murder of a prominent Chemist and the framing of his dilettante son as the murderer. It starts with a very 'poetic' opening by Friedrich, then descends into the crime at hand!
After the main story, that very first BATMAN adventure is reprinted and it is interesting to see how Friedrich kept the main elements, but made the story more german to the 1960s . . and added ROBIN as well! There is a special note in the artwork at the end of the first story explaining the significance of reprinting the original Kane version.
(It turns out this same plot was reworked 4 more times in three anniversary issues - Roy Thomas and Marshall Rogers retold the story in 1986, as part of _Secret Origins_ issue #6 focusing on the Golden Age Batman. To celebrate Batman's 600th appearance in _Detective Comics_, two new versions of the story were printed in 1991. Marv Wolfman wrote a story with Jim Aparo illustrating, and Alan Grant wrote a story with Norm Breyfogle illustrating, both published in _Detective Comics_ issue #627. It was updated again as part of the _New 52_ reboot in 2014. Brad Meltzer wrote a new version with Bryan Hitch illustrating, published in _Detective Comics_ (Vol. 2) issue #27.!)
This is a terrific copy of DETECTIVE COMICS #387, with a bright and glossy cover, supple pages with clean printing, and a strong, perfectly straight spine! Not a fault in sight! Overstreet assigns an 8.0 VF copy of this issue a value of $76 . . . but we're making it an affordable treasure at just $58 . . with the added bonus of our always-LOW shipping!
