DETECTIVE COMICS, debuting in 1937, was the final publication of the entrepreneur Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, whose comics company, National Allied Publications, would evolve into DC COMICS, one of the world's two largest comic book publishers, though long after its founder had left it. It was the birthplace, in issue #27, of Bruce Wayne and his alter ego of BATMAN!

Here, 26 years after his momentous debut, you get the Caped Crusader in "Trail of the Talking Mask!" by Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino. Tipped off by private investigator Hugh Rankin, (who has been trying to get into the Mystery Analysts of Gotham club), BATMAN and ROBIN attempt to stop a heist at the Jewel Mart, but find that the robbers are almost inhuman in their strength and mannerisms. Hugh learns that the whole thing is being orchestrated by a criminal calling himself MAKE-UP MAN, who is using animatronic machines that look like people to do his robberies. Rankin follows three hoods to the MAKE-UP MAN, but is captured by his thugs.

When BATMAN and ROBIN track down the clues to MAKE-UP MAN's hide out, they end up fighting his constructs, his hoods, and a giant mask. The Dynamic Duo manage to capture the villain and rescue Hugh. Hugh apologizes for his impulsiveness telling BATMAN that he only wanted to be inducted into the Mystery Analysts. BATMAN tells him that one day he'll be admitted to the group if he works at it.

You also get a back-up story, "Break Up the Bottle-Neck Gang!" written by Gardner Fox, and illustrated by Infantino, with great inking by Sid Greene, and starring the ELONGATED MAN and his wife SUE!

This is a near-pristine 58-year old comic - the binding is strong, the colors are bright, the covers still have their gloss . . just in top-notch condition.
