Item Description

DEADPOOL , the 'Merc with a Mouth, was created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist/writer Rob Liefeld. He first appeared in _New Mutants_ #98 (cover-dated Feb. 1991). Initially, Deadpool was depicted as a supervillain when he made his first appearance and in issues of _X-Force_, but later evolved into his more recognizable antiheroic persona. Deadpool, whose real name is WADE WINSTON WILSON, is a disfigured mercenary with the superhuman ability of regeneration and physical prowess. The character has a tendency to talk and joke constantly, including breaking the fourth wall for humorous effect and running gags.

Here are the first two issues of his own title, from early in 1997. DEADPOOL #1 is 60 pages of irreverant antiheroics, and in "Hey! It's Deadpool! or . . DEADPOOL #1", his mission takes him to Antarctica to tangle with SASQUATCH, and he blows up a gamma research station in the process. Finding out that the melting gamma core will irradiate the entire southern hemisphere, DEADPOOL fixes the problem and saves the day. He decides being a good guy isn't exactly his style.

This issue also carries a 9-page 'Behind the Scenes' feature, with a peek at the making of the issue, including script fragments, rough pencils, cover process and character designs.

In "Operation: Fat Wacky Doctor's Game" in #2, DEADPOOL peeps in on Siryn, while a band of ninjas is capturing his buddy Weasel. DEADPOOL tracks him down to a compound in the Nevada desert where Taskmaster is training his pupils. Being quickly taken down by Taskmaster, DEADPOOL discovers that the bad guy has offered Weasel a job working for his organization. Changing up his tactics to throw off Taskmaster's powers, DEADPOOL takes down the villain but not before having his middle finger cut off!

These first two issues of DEADPOOL are in near-pristine condition, with glossy covers, strong bindings, and not a flaw in sight!. We're conservatively grading it an 9.0 VF/NM - for which Overstreet assigns a value of $78. We're offering it for just $64 - the best value on HipComic!
